Proxmox Introduces New Import Wizard to Simplify VMware ESXi VM Migration

Proxmox, a leading virtualization solution provider, has recently launched a new import wizard designed to streamline the process of migrating VMware ESXi VMs to their platform. This much-needed feature comes at a crucial time in the industry as organizations are looking for alternatives to VMware’s vSphere due to high renewal costs. In fact, in a recent article highlighting alternatives to VMware, Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) was featured as a top contender.

The new import wizard seamlessly integrates into Proxmox VE’s existing storage plugin system, making it easy for users to import their VMware ESXi VMs. With the integration of the API and web-based user interface, users can easily import their VMs and have most of their original configuration settings translated to Proxmox VE’s configuration model with minimal downtime.

Currently in its technical preview state, the import wizard was added during the development cycle of Proxmox VE 8.2. Despite still being in active development, early reports suggest that the wizard is stable and shows significant potential for future upgrades, including adding support for other import sources like OVF/OVA files.

To start using this new feature, users need to set up a new storage for the import source through the Proxmox VE web interface. Once this is done, they can choose the designated storage, view all eligible guests for import, and initiate the process with the option to adjust certain settings. Further adjustments can be made after the import to ensure users have complete control over their VM setups.

The import wizard currently supports ESXi versions 6.5 to 8.0, with some limitations regarding vSAN storage and performance implications when using a vCenter as the import source. To access this tool, users will have to update their Proxmox VE to specific versions of the pve-manager and libpve-storage-perl packages found in the pvetest and pve-no-subscription repositories.

Proxmox is dedicated to providing accessible and open-source virtualization solutions to its users. By leveraging the official ESXi API and utilizing a user space filesystem with optimized read-ahead caching in Rust, a safe, fast, and modern programming language, Proxmox ensures that this new feature seamlessly integrates into their wider ecosystem.
